   We do not believe like some people do that it is the number of dogs or breeds of dog a person has that makes  the difference between a good breeder and a "puppy mill".  We believe instead that it is the love given and the quality of the care given, plus the care taken in placing the puppies that makes the difference. 

  I  have known breeders with a large number of one breed or a small number of dogs that I would consider good breeders and I also know breeders that handle several breeds that are good breeders.  On the other hand, I have also known bad breeders from all the above situations including those with only a small number of dogs in one breed.  And it does not matter what registry they are with, there are good and bad breeders in all registries, including AKC.  Many people think that the dogs being AKC registered guarantees quality dogs, it does not.   Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with AKC, it is just another registry  and like the other registries, its main purpose is to record the parentage of the dogs.  No registry can guarantee that the dog you are buying is healthy or of a particular quality.

  You must look at the individual breeder not how many dogs the breeder has or does not have or at who the dogs are registered with.  In general a good breeder cares about his/her animals and takes good care of them.   The good breeder makes careful breedings and is very careful what kind of home the puppies go to.  A bad breeder is in it just for the money and will cut corners anywhere he/she can to make more profit, including the care of their dogs.  The bad breeder also will sell to anyone who has the money, no questions asked. 

  You should ask questions and expect to get straight answers. If you can not get good answers to your questions, back away from the deal.  Expect the breeder to ask you a lot of questions too.  A good breeder will not sell to anyone who will not answer his questions.
